There are effective student leaders at OCC, despite what a recent editorial suggests. The anonymous author of "Involvement: Leadership needed" writes "so-called student leaders often appear to be bobble head dolls for President John Larson" and "arrogance appears often apparent" from these "chosen few." This argument is made after the meeting concerning tuition increase highlighted in the Feb. 5 issue of the Viking News.

The author feels the people at the meeting were simply "bobble heads." Then why was this person not present to shake us up. The Jan. 20 meeting was not only open to every person at OCC, but also was advertised on Ocean Cruiser for all students to participate. At the meeting, the author of the article would have seen a presentation that included statistics, not just hunchesPrice increases of between 4.9 percent and 7.8 percent occurred at most New Jersey colleges, and there was a drop in funding by the state.

So as these "bobble heads" sat there, a 3-percent tuition increase seemed reasonable compared to Brookdale's 6.8 percent increase.

They (participants) alsolearned OCC had one of the lowest tuition increases in the state the past three years despite having one of the highest increases in enrollment.

The editorial also lists all these so called flaws in the student-leadership system, but what about the great things student groups do?

Student government and PTK (Phi Theta Kappa) are working together on Relay For Life, a benefit for cancer.

Water Watch is always working on projects to clean up the environment in and around Ocean County.

SLAP (Students LearningAbout Politics) ran a televised debate for the Third Congressional Distract.

All of these events were open to the public and led by OCC students.

I encourage anyone who is interested in clubs or organizations at OCC to join. If anyone has a problem with the leadership at OCC, then he or she should join student government or a club and make a change. That is what makes a democracy great. The OCC student leadership is more than willing to listen and take action.
