Finding a tutor is just a click away with OCC's new learning-resources community-message board on Ocean Cruiser.

"The message board allows students to communicate with each other about any academic related issue," Lorett Cramer, career specialist in the Center for Academic Services, said. "Announcements, schedules, and peer-tutoring information can be found online."

Cramer said students could access the virtual community by logging into Ocean Cruiser and clicking "My Communities." The message board can be found under "Tutoring and Learning Resources" in "My Generic Communities."

According to Cramer, the community message board allows students to "post" information, look for study groups on campus and check important academic messages.

"Currently, only a small percentage of students check the announcements online," Cramer said. "If more students were aware of our online message board, many of them would be able to easily find the tutoring help they need."

Cramer said the-tutoring-and-learning-resource message board is also home to a variety of other messages not posted by students. The message board lists the mathematics, writing, accounting, science and history tutoring schedules as well as the location for the Study Strategy Sessions.

The "Community Book-marks" section offers study tips and an online "learning-style quiz" that determines how different students absorb information. The "Shared Files" section provides information ranging from "Study Tip Sheets" to "using Ocean Cruiser."

"We hope through the message board, students can find the help they need from others and learn how to change things on their own," Cramer said. "We try to update the site as much as possible."

Cramer said the message board has been successful in connecting students at school and increasing the sense of community on campus.

"Study groups have formed as a result of students being connected virtually," she ad-ded. "The tutoring community is here to stay."

Anyone interested in becoming a peer tutor should contact Cramer in the center at (732) 255-0400x2427.
